If you are going to go around making extreme statements about how horrific consumerism is and how it is destroying our society, you might want to avoid doing any of the following:
In the words of a dear friend, “Just because you have a didgeridoo in your house doesn’t make you a hippie.”
I don’t choose to be a vegetarian or vegan…I choose for my meals to be well-rounded omnivorian. I have no complaint though, about people who choose to eat strictly vegan. I do, however, have a problem with people who choose to be vegan and then berate everyone around them for eating meat. Here is the thing…when you go so extreme as to condemn eating meat to prevent torturing of animals, you have made a pretty serious statement. Funny, though, how people getting paid barely livable salaries and worked to the bone to pick your vegetables is not a problem. Here is my point…if you lean too far to one side of the spectrum you run the risk of blocking your view of the whole picture. I would daresay it might be hypocritical to berate people for torturing animals while munching on broccoli grown in Mexico by people who are treated poorly. {GASP!} In addition, the food you choose to eat or not eat does not give you superior status to anyone else around you. Unfortunately, the fact that your coworker ate a bag of Cheetos does not mean he is not worthy of a space on our planet. How about this plan: I eat what I want, you eat what you want. You don’t berate me for eating animals and I won’t berate you for the exploitation of farm-workers. Deal? Oh, and one more thing: it is not necessary to preface every food you eat with the word “vegan”. “I just had a vegan smoothie”….sweet, because I just had an omnivorian hamburger, and it was delicious!
